Discipline Philosophy

The word discipline refers to "teaching the mind and body to produce a specific character or pattern of behavior which leads to moral or mental improvement." At Woodside Schools, we let children know that it is all right to express their feelings and help them to channel those feelings into legitimate means of expression. Our teachers review the school rules with the children as often as necessary. When a child shows a lack of control, an unwillingness to cooperate with others, or an unacceptable behavior, the child may be removed from the group to a spot nearby and given time to think about the situation. This could mean removing the child to another location in the room or play yard or sending the child to another group or the office for a time. After a reasonable period, the child who has been removed will be welcomed back and a discussion between the teacher and the child about the unacceptable behavior and acceptable alternatives will take place.
